One of the most important museums in Switzerland, the Basel History Museum opened in 1894 and is now housed in four buildings, of which the 14th century Barfüsserkirche (Bare Foot Friars Church) is one. With a display area of 6,200 square metres there are many highlights in the museum’s collection, including the Cathedral Treasury, with unique specimens of the medieval goldsmiths’ art, late Gothic tapestries and the treasures of Basel’s guilds. The ‘Lällenkönig’ (‘Babbling King’), is a crowned head with a movable tongue and eyes, there are the fragments of Basel’s Dance of Death, the coin cabinet and much more.
