Located in the square in front of the Rathaus or Town Hall (see separate entry), the Banner Carrier Fountain (Vennerbrunnen) is by Hans Geing. In medieval Switzerland, the Venner was a military and political title which carried great power. Each Venner belonged to a guild and was responsible for peace and protection of a portion of the city and, when necessary, for leading troops from that area into battle. The mayor (Schultheiss) was only elected from candidates from the Venners or one other position. The fountain was erected in 1542 and the Venner is displayed in full armour carrying his banner.
