The Bally Shoe Museum will particularly delight lady travellers and is located at Schönenwerd, approximately 5 km southwest of Aarau. The museum houses one of the world’s largest collections of historical boots and shoes and was opened in 1942, in what was once the founder’s home. In 1847 Carl Franz Bally(1821-1899), together with his brother, took over his father’s elastic ribbon and suspender manufacturing business, but it was in 1851, following a visit to Paris, that the world famous Bally company was founded. Initially the shoes were handmade in the basement of Bally’s home by German shoemakers.
