Balerna lies one kilometre from Chiasso. Evidence of its historic importance is visible in the ruins of Pontegana Castle. The town dates back to at least the Roman era and possibly earlier. There are a number of interesting buildings to visit, of which the most notable are: The Collegiate Church of St. Victor, which was built in the 15th Century on Roman foundations, the 16th Century Chapel of St. Mary of the Graces and St. John the Baptist, the 18th Century Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Pontegana, the 18th Century Episcopalian Villa and the 17th Century Mansions of the Monti and Melzi families.
