There are two large railway stations in Base, the Basel SBB (see separate entry) and the Basel Badischer Bahnhof, which was designed in art nouveau style by the architect Karl Moser (1860-1936) and opened in 1913. Curiously, the station is on Swiss territory, but the platforms and part of the entrance hall are on German soil and the station is operated by the German railway company Deutsche Bahn. This results from an 1852 treaty still in force today. The allegorical statues over the entrance are the work of the Swiss sculptor Carl Burckhardt (1878–1923). The station is also referred to as ‘The Musical Station’ and stages many musical events.
