Avenches Castle was built in the 13th century by the Bishops of Lausanne. It has been municipal property since 1804. Its Renaissance gate and decorated facade are a delight. The Castle is now used for artists’ exhibitions. The town hall is the work of 18th century Bernese architect, Nicolas Hebler. In the centre of town are beautiful arcades, restaurants, cake shops and boulevard cafés. 2,000 years ago, Aventicum, as it was then known, became the capital of Roman Helvetia. The Emperor Augustus founded Aventicum and at its most powerful, in the 2nd century, it had over 20,000 inhabitants.
