Located on the banks of the River Rhine at Augst, approximately 13 km southeast of Basel, is the Augusta Raurica, the largest archaeological park in Switzerland, where once 20,000 people lived in the Roman town. You can the see the well preserved theatre and the temple across the street, the remains of the amphitheatre, the aqueduct, and the main forum with the temple of Jupiter and the town council assembly chamber. The Roman Museum houses the Kaiseraugst silver treasure, which was only found in 1961/62, and you can wander through the reconstructed Roman House and its artefacts.
