The 1959 Aargauer Kunsthaus was extended in 2003 by a new building, designed by leading architects Herzog & de Meuron and the artist Rémy Zaugg. It now has 3,000 m² of exhibition space and has one of the finest public collections of Swiss art from the 18th century to the present; a collection which started in 1860. Highlights of the older period are works by Caspar Wolf, Johann Heinrich Füssli and Arnold Böcklin amongst others. An interesting aspect of the museum is the ‘Artwork of the Month’ programme. About six special exhibitions are staged annually and there is a museum library, café, and shop.
