Housed in three buildings, including the 16th-century Hôtel Ratze and a former slaughter house, the Fribourg Art and History Museum has a broadly based collection of archaeology and art. There are prehistoric, Roman, and medieval objects and a remarkable collection of Burgundian belt buckles. Amongst other unusual items are a (c.1600) series of fourteen intricate biblical scenes, carved in relief from panels of lime wood and a 1755 jewel-decorated skeleton of St Felix, with glitter for lips and a phial of dried blood resting beside the bones. The lovely garden contains monumental sculptures by Saint Phalle, Luginbühl, Ramseyer, Wiggli and Angéloz.
