The Anna Seiler Fountain commemorates the founder of Berne’s first hospital; it is located at the upper end of Marktgasse. This is another of the beautiful 16th century Hans Geing fountains which are a feature of Berne; it portrays Anna Seiler in a blue dress pouring water into a dish. The column, which has an interesting capital, was brought from the Roman town now called Avenches. In her will, dated 1354, Anna asked that the city found a hospital in her house, which today is in Zeughausgasse. The hospital, after being moved, was called Inselspital and today treats about 220,000 patients annually.
