The village of Andermatt in the Unsern Valley is located at an altitude of 1,447 metres, about 33 km south of Altdorf and is central to four major Alpine passes: the Göscheneralp, Oberalp, St Gotthard and Furka. It was first referred to in 1203 and has a population of around 1,300. Additional attractions include the 1735/36 Mariahilf Chapel, St Kolumban Church (one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the canton) and the Town hall. The well preserved village centre has majestic houses with splendid Rococo interiors and the cobbled main street is a reminder of the Gotthard Mail Coach.
