The Anatomy Museum of Basel University has a large number of exhibits, which serve both as a teaching collection for medical students and useful source of information on the structure of the human body for the visiting layman. Founded in 1824 by Professor Carl Gustav Jung, it displays original preparations of human body parts, organs and tissues and also covers the field of human prenatal development. Amongst the historical specimens are the world’s oldest certified anatomical preservation, a skeleton prepared in Basel by Andreas Vesal in 1543 and another by Felix Platter produced in 1571. There are specialist temporary exhibitions.
