Founded in 1905, the Swiss Alpine Museum is devoted to providing knowledge of the Alpine world and its history. Its permanent exhibition is spread over two floors of the museum and focuses on photography, cartography and alpinism and the subsidiary field of collections of tourist advertisements, paintings, land survey, folklore and documentation. Highlights include the large relief model of the Bernese Oberland, the famous Scheuchzer map of 1712 and Ferdinand Hodler’s painting ‘Ascent and Fall’. Above all, the museum seeks to convey the atmosphere, beauty, variety and mystery of Switzerland’s mountain landscape.
