Allschwil is located approximately 4 km west of Basel and, with a population of around 19,000, is the largest town in the Basel-Country canton; it has a border with France on two sides. Allschwil’s allegiance has changed many times, from Alsace in the Middle Ages, then to the Bishop of Basel from 1004 to 1798 and back to France from 1798 to 1815 before reverting to Switzerland. The attractive village centre is listed as a Swiss heritage site. The local museum (Baslerstrasse 48) documents the long history of the town and the interesting construction of the typical houses of the 17th to 19th centuries.
