Albert Anker (1831-1910) is often referred to as the ‘national painter’ of Switzerland, because of his popular portrayal of 19th century Swiss village life. He was born approximately 21 km southwest of Biel in the village of Ins, where he also lived from 1890 until his death. The house was built in 1803 and Anker spent the summer months there; the house and studio have been preserved in their original state as a museum. Anker is best known for his paintings of his fellow beings in their everyday environment, but his work also included some 30 still life paintings.
