Located at Riggisberg, approximately 21 km south of Berne, the Abegg Foundation houses one of the world’s most important textile collections and is a research and conservation centre devoted to historic textiles. Established in 1961 by Werner and Margaret Abegg with their own lifelong collection, the museum focuses primarily on the European and Mediterranean areas from antiquity to the early 19th century; it also has an extensive library. The textile exhibits are displayed in their historic and artistic context with art works, paintings and sculptures. The antique Egyptian hangings and the Silk Road items from the early Middle Ages are particularly important.
